The GEO-Metric Kit with a home-made base

While shopping for a friend's birthday gift at the hobby store, I came across this handsome 1/8 scale vinyl kit of the Frankenstein Monster as he appeared in "Son Of Frankenstein" (1939). It was one of those kits that said, "Buy me!" And I did. I built Frank straight out of the box, and painted him in black and white, with gray highlights.

The figure kit is sculpted by William Paquet, who did a great job in creating the likeness of actor Boris Karloff. As far as I'm concerned, Karloff will always be the definitive Frankenstein Monster.

I built the the base using Amaco's Sculptamold onto the cut-off remnant of a shelf. Having painted Frank in black and white, I realized that I had to continue this motif with the base. So the groundwork is painted in shades of gray; starting with dark gray, then dry brushing lighter shades on the highlights. I carved the headstones out of Balsa Foam.

Frankenstein originally came with the severed artificial arm of the Police Inspector, which was supposed to be placed in Frank's right hand. But when I decided to make a base for this figure, I stuck the Inspector's hand in the ground to create the illusion of somebody bursting out from a grave. Frankenstein's hunched-over pose actually works very well with this scenario. He really looks like he's gazing warily at the sight of his unexpected visitor.
