Indiana Jones Vs. The Mummy

By Sean Farrell

I bought the Andrea Miniatures of the "1930s Adventurer" (but we really know who he's supposed to be) as well as their Mummy. Both figures are 1/32 in scale, making them pretty small, and thus perfect for a diorama, especially when I posed them facing each other. The Indy figure was originally holding a cross in his hand. Since that wouldn't work for a dio set in Egypt, I removed that and gave him a torch.

I then started to set up a basic diorama by placing the figures on a styrofoam base with walls that were cut from florists' green foam. I like to use this stuff whenever I can, because it's cheaper than Balsa Foam. I very quickly realized that I needed more support for the base.

And so I glued some walls onto the styrofoam base, thus making the whole base itself far more sturdy. I used Balsa Foam for the floors, because that was more refined than the florist foam. Since Indy's legs were sculpted so that he stood on steps, I sculpted a staircase for him to stand on from Balsa Foam. With the stairs done, I carved out an entranceway at the top of the steps for Indy to walk in from.

I got a piece of scrap Balsa Foam and laid it across the steps to give the room a little more character. I then gave the entire place a coat of flat black, over which I lightly dry-brushed with sand. The dry-brushing brought out the rough surfaces of the florists foam, as well as the Balsa Foam. I also dry-brushed some tan in the corners and elsewhere, to try and get a little more color into the scene.

The Mummy's sarcophagus came with the figure, and after painting that up, I added it into the scene. Indy's whip is a piece of black wire that I found in the packaging of an eletrontric gadget. It was used to hold down a small accessory, but once I glued the end into Indy's hand, I could shape it into his whip in mid-flick. The result is Indiana Jones meeting the Mummy.
